If your definition of vacation involves time off from work and hotel, it might be hard to be on vacation all year round.. In our family, when we happen to have a free afternoon, we like to go out and explore! Vacations don’t always have to be planned or last a week long or be in an all-inclusive resort. What about those 4 hours we have off today? Can we transform them from boring afternoon into a little vacation close to home? What if we could…
Last Saturday, we worked in the backyard all morning while the kids were jumping on the trampoline and having fun with the neighbors. But at lunch time, we decided to stop for the afternoon. We wanted to spend some time together. No work involved. And God knows that can be hard.. So we packed a little bit (just a few snacks and toys) and we got into the car.
We drove all the way up to Jones Lake. Only 45 minutes from our house (or is it an hour?!). Jones Lake is really one of our favorite destination close to home. It is just so beautiful! The view of the mountains you have from there is amazing!
The lake, nestled high above the other lakes we usually go to, offers a close up look of 4 or 5 mountain peaks. And in April-May, the peaks are still covered in snow which makes the scenery absolutely stunning! The ride to the lake brings you quite high in altitude. High enough to see spots of snow on the side of the road.
The drive itself is fun for the kids because the minute you reach the bottom of the mountain, it’s a gravel trail. Gravel trail = no need to buckle up = so much fun!
Once we got to the top, it was way too cold to jump in the water. I couldn’t believe I had prepared the bathing suits “just in case”. There were a few other people but not many. We saw a canoe on the lake… What a great place to bring a canoe!
Anyway! We just played in the sand, made a fire, ate some snacks, played Frisbee and soccer. Papa and son tried to fish a little bit but they didn’t get any luck. We took a few pictures, flew the drone.. And that was pretty much it. A simple but fun afternoon that took us out of our routine. That was really all it took to feel on vacation for the day.
What about you? Do you have a close by place you like to go once in a while? Just to make life a little more fun and less hard..
